What this tool does

Computes VAT and the gross amount from a net amount and a rate. You enter the rate; the tool does not decide what is taxable or exempt.

How to use it

  1. Enter the net amount.
  2. Enter the VAT rate as a percentage.
  3. Run it to get the tax and the gross total.

Worked example

A net amount of 100 at 10% gives 10 in VAT and a gross total of 110.

Calculation method

Taxnet*rate/100
Tax-inclusive totalnet*(1+rate/100)

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract the net amount from a gross figure?
Divide the gross by 1.1 for the net at 10%; the remainder is VAT. For other rates divide by (1 + rate/100). 110 ÷ 1.1 is 100.
How do I handle exempt supplies?
Entering a rate of 0 gives zero tax. Note that exemption and zero-rating are reported differently, so check your tax rules.

What this tool does not cover

Exemption and zero-rating decisions, input tax credits, and filing forms are out of scope. Confirm the applicable rate with your local rules.
