What this tool does
Calculates how many tiles you need from the area and one tile’s dimensions, adding a waste allowance and rounding up to whole tiles.
How to use it
- Enter the area in square metres.
- Enter one tile’s width and height in millimetres.
- Enter the waste allowance; raise it where many cuts are needed.
- Run it for the number of tiles.
Worked example
20 m² with 300×300 mm tiles and 10% waste: each tile is 0.09 m², so 20 ÷ 0.09 × 1.1 rounds up to 245 tiles.
Calculation method
Whole tiles required
ceil(area/(length*width/10000)*(1+waste/100))Frequently asked questions
- Are grout joints accounted for?
- No. Joints mean slightly fewer tiles are needed, so the result errs on the generous side. Use the grout calculator for jointing material.
- What waste allowance should I use?
- Around 10% for straight layouts in rectangular rooms; 15% or more for diagonal patterns or spaces with columns and curves. Adjust to site conditions.
What this tool does not cover
It does not produce a cutting layout. Pattern matching, dye-lot variation, and breakage spares are up to you.
