What this tool does

Computes the volume and weight of gravel for a rectangular area: volume times bulk density, plus a waste allowance for the order weight.

How to use it

  1. Enter length and width in metres.
  2. Enter the layer depth in metres.
  3. Enter the bulk density, using your supplier’s figure.
  4. Enter the waste allowance and run it.

Worked example

10 m × 5 m × 0.1 m gives 5 m³; at 1,600 kg/m³ with 10% waste that is 8,800 kg.

Calculation method

Base volumelength*width*depth
Order masslength*width*depth*density*(1+waste/100)

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the 1,600 default density?
It is illustrative. Actual bulk density varies with stone type, gradation, and moisture. Replace it with your supplier’s figure for the order to be right.
How do I order in tonnes?
Divide the kilogram result by 1,000 — 8,800 kg is 8.8 tonnes.

What this tool does not cover

It assumes a rectangular area. Settlement after compaction, drainage slopes, and irregular shapes are not reflected. The default density is not a material specification.
