What this tool does
Computes lumber volume in board feet: thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet ÷ 12, multiplied by the number of pieces.
How to use it
- Enter thickness in inches.
- Enter width in inches.
- Enter length in feet.
- Enter the piece count and run it.
Worked example
Ten pieces of 2 in × 6 in × 8 ft lumber give 2 × 6 × 8 ÷ 12 × 10 = 80 board feet.
Calculation method
Board feet
thickness*width*length*count/12Frequently asked questions
- Is mixing units correct?
- Yes. Board feet conventionally take thickness and width in inches with length in feet. Entering length in inches gives a figure 12× too large.
- Nominal or actual dimensions?
- Lumber is normally sold by board feet computed from nominal sizes such as 2×4. Dried and planed pieces measure less, so agree the basis with your supplier.
