What this tool does

Converts an image to a Base64 data URI, or turns a Base64 string back into an image file. Useful for embedding small images directly in HTML or CSS.

How to use it

  1. Choose the direction: encode for image to string, decode for string to image.
  2. For encode, pick an image file; for decode, paste the Base64 string.
  3. Run it, then copy or download the result.

Worked example

Encoding a PNG returns a string beginning with data:image/png;base64,. Feeding that string into decode restores the original image.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the size grow?
Base64 represents three bytes as four characters, so it grows about 33%. Large images are better served as linked files than embedded data URIs.
Is Base64 compression or encryption?
Neither. It is an encoding that anyone can reverse, so it cannot keep anything secret.

What this tool does not cover

Files are processed in your browser and not uploaded. Very large images produce long strings that can slow the browser.
